What is Pakkawood?

What is Pakkawood?

By Desiree Weeks

There are a lot of options available for knife handles, each with their own unique look and feel. One such option is pakkawood. An expertly engineered composite material, pakkawood is created from wood and resin, fused together through the use of intense heat. While it may not be a naturally occurring wood, it is given the look of wood through the manufacturing process. This process involves stacking layers of thin wood together with resin in between. The resin both keeps these layers together and serves as a sealant, making pakkawood more impervious to water.

Natural wood itself is prone to issues, such as splitting, chipping, and warping. However, pakkawood doesn’t have these issues and can withstand even the harshest of use. It’s this durability that makes pakkawood a great choice when it comes to knife handles.

Not only is pakkawood an ideal alternative to natural wood, it’s beautiful too. It can be created to mimic any natural wood finish or dyed to create a rainbow of colors. Additionally, during the manufacturing process, the material undergoes polishing and sanding, giving it a glossy look that is scratch resistant. Here are a few of the great knives using pakkawood that you can find from BudK!
