How to Select a Blade

When shopping for a knife, the blade is obviously the most important feature that you look at, but do you know what you’re looking for? Here are some things to consider.

Shape

The belly of the blade and type of point is the first thing that you need to look at when you’re buying a knife. This is what defines the overall shape of the blade and can be specific to what kind of tasks the knife is better suited for. The belly is the curved part of the blade along the cutting edge of the knife that leads up to the point, which is the tip of the blade, and its position and shape define the overall blade shape. Some of the types of blades you’ll find are spear point, clip point, drop point, trailing point, Wharncliffe, sheepsfoot, hawkbill, razor, tanto and guthook.

Steel

Blade steel type is important when choosing a knife because you need to consider the environment that you’ll be using it the most in and the wet or dry conditions. It’s a reality that all steel can rust when exposed to moisture but there are some types that are most rust-resistant than others. Stainless steel has chromium as a major ingredient, making it more corrosion-resistant. A high carbon steel is less rust-resistant but more wear-resistant, which is essential for a knife that you’re consistently putting to hard use. So, you’ll need to make sure that you store it well and be a little more vigilant about keeping it dry.

Finish

The finish on a blade is the treatment or coating that’s done to the steel during the manufacturing or handcrafting process. The most common that you’ll find are mirror-polished, black-oxide coated and stonewashed. A mirror-polished finish is basically what it says. A stainless steel blade is polished until its like a mirror, which looks great and can offer corrosion-resistance. A black-oxide coating is achieved by putting the blade in a solution that reacts with the iron in the steel to create a black coating. It also offers corrosion-resistance and a non-reflective finish that’s perfect for covert tactical work. A stonewashed finish is achieved by tumbling the blade in an abrasive material, which makes it difficult to see scratches from day-to-day use and also makes it non-reflective.
